Life in New Haven

With a population of just under 125,000, New Haven has a tantalizing array of restaurants, ranging from Eritrean to Indonesian, to the restaurant that invented the hamburger and the best pizza this side of Italy.

Culturally, New Haven shines with its eclectic collection of museums and theaters. For the outdoorsperson, the city offers several substantial state parks, major rivers, and a harbor. It is also a convenient starting point for longer excursions to other parts of New England.

Safety

Our school is in a relatively safe area, but safety must be a constant concern. Be alert always as in any large city. At night, do not walk alone. Try to have a friend with you when you leave any building after dark. Otherwise, you may call the Yale Escort Service at 432-walk (9255) to be driven to your home. Campus police may be reached at 432-4400 and the emergency number is 111 from all campus phones.

Shopping

There are many food and clothing stores nearby. The Hamden Plaza on Dixwell Avenue has various clothing and shoe stores. Camping supplies can be purchased at Sports Authority in North Haven or Trail Blazers in New Haven. A Stop and Shop food store can be found at the corner of Putnam and Dixwell Avenues. There is a Shaw's Supermarket on Whalley Avenue. Second year students, staff and faculty are a good resource for information about the surrounding area.
