Graedel, Thomas E.
Profile
Industrial Ecology, Second edition, T.E. Graedel and B.R. Allenby, 412 pp., Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 2003. (Translated into Chinese, 2003; Russian, 2004, Korean, 2006.) This volume, now in its second edition, remains the only textbook in its field, and one widely known and used internationally.
The multilevel cycle of anthropogenic copper, T.E. Graedel, D. van Beers, M. Bertram, K. Fuse, R.B. Gordon, A. Gritsinin, A. Kapur, R. Klee, R. Lifset, L. Memon, H. Rechberger, S. Spatari, and D. Vexler, Environmental Science & Technology, 38, 1242-1252, 2004. This paper is the first to characterize and quantify on several spatial levels the human uses of an industrial metal.
Copper mines above and below the ground, A. Kapur and T.E. Graedel, Environmental Science & Technology, 40, 3135-3141, 2006. This paper emphasizes the importance of discards and recycling streams as future sources of technological resources.
Metal stocks and sustainability, R.B. Gordon, M. Bertram, and T.E. Graedel, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the US, 103, 1209-1214, 2006. This paper demonstrates that there is now as much copper in use in the US as in virgin ore. It received wide coverage in about twenty news media, and I did an interview on the results with National Public Radio.
Exploring the engine of anthropogenic iron cycles: Saturation of per-capita stocks in use”, Daniel B. Müller, Tao Wang, Benjamin Duval and T.E. Graedel, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the US, 103, in press, 2006. This paper shows that highly developed societies appear to reach a point of saturation in their use of iron, and that this result might be useful in predicting metal needs in the next few decades.
